For graduate chapters within Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, one of the highest honors a member can receive is the title of Member of the Year. This member, chosen by other members of her chapter, exemplifies what it means to be of service to all mankind and sisterly to all chapter members.

Member of the Year
Patricia Stone Motes

Gamma Nu Omega Chapter’s Member of the Year for 2026 is Dr. Patricia Stone Motes!
Patricia was initiated in the Beta Sigma Chapter at South Carolina State University in Fall 1974 and has been a dedicated, decades-long member of the Gamma Nu Omega Chapter.
She holds Life Membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, the Greater Columbia Chapter of NAACP, and the SC State National Alumni Association. Patricia also holds membership in the Columbia SC Branch National Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated; Columbia Alumni Chapter of Fairfield High School Alumni Association; Brookland Baptist Church. Patricia states that all of these organizations provide her an opportunity to support community development, equity, education, and service to others. These memberships offer opportunities for beautiful connections and fellowship with others with shared beliefs.
In her spare time reading brings her joy. She enjoys quiet reflective walks on the trails near her home. Patricia relishes trying new recipes and “cooking up something new". She takes special pride in her role as “Grammy” to her four grandchildren.
Patricia says she “tries to live by her personal goal of "authenticity" - honesty with compassion and grace. "It is my effort to live in support of the Biblical instruction in Philippians 4:8 MSG. ‘Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious-the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.’”
Patricia writes that her best experiences within the chapter have been serving in areas of infrastructure to include strategic planning, standards, bylaws, protocol. Patricia believes that infrastructure is central to the work of AKA, essential to the chapter's operations and its work within the community. As the Rituals Chairman, she continues to focus on the tenets of AKA - who we are as sisters.
